iPadOS Updates Over 5G: A New Feature for 2021 iPad Pro Users
Apple’s 2021 iPad Pro models now offer users the ability to download and install iPadOS updates over a 5G connection, mirroring a feature previously introduced with the iPhone 12.
Extending 5G Functionality
With the advent of 5G-enabled iPhones, Apple introduced an option in iOS that allowed iPhone 12 users to download iOS updates while connected to a 5G cellular network. Now, this functionality extends to iPadOS as well.
Support Page Update
Apple recently updated a support page to reflect this change, titled “Use 5G with your iPad.” This page provides instructions on managing data connections for the updated iPad Pro models.
Enabling Data Modes
Within the support page, users can find a section on data modes, which includes a new option: “Allow More Data on 5G.” By selecting this feature, users grant iPadOS permission to utilize more data for various system tasks and app features, such as higher-quality FaceTime video and HD content streams. Additionally, this setting enables iPadOS updates to be conducted over cellular networks.
Activation Process
Apple cautions that the setting may be enabled by default for users with unlimited data plans, depending on their carrier. Others will need to activate it manually. To do so, users should navigate to the Settings app, select Cellular Data, then Cellular Data Options, and finally choose Data Mode. From there, they can tap “Allow more data on 5G” to activate the feature.
Existing Data Mode Options
The same section also retains the existing options for Standard and Low Data Mode, which respectively maintain or reduce the amount of data used on cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
This enhancement underscores Apple’s commitment to providing users with seamless and efficient updates while leveraging the capabilities of 5G connectivity on its devices.
