Abbotts Creek Community Center: Promoting Health and Recreation
To address the needs of a rapidly expanding urban area, the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with Clark Nexsen to design the Abbotts Creek Community Center, focusing on promoting health and wellness. This health-centric facility encompasses a high bay gymnasium space along with supporting classrooms, fitness areas, and staff quarters. Additionally, outdoor athletic and fitness amenities complement the indoor facilities.
The gymnasium, constructed with bow-trussed ceilings, accommodates full-size basketball and volleyball courts, with cross-courts available for basketball enthusiasts. Supporting spaces include multipurpose rooms, a kitchen, storage areas, offices, and classrooms catering to students enrolled in year-round programs at nearby Wake County schools. Furthermore, the center features a studio, fitness center, staff offices, and a welcoming lobby. Shower and locker facilities are also provided, with the entire building designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
The structural framework of the building comprises a steel frame, while the exterior combines ground-face CMU veneer and metal panels. Insulated fiberglass sandwich panels with clear insulated vision glass are utilized for the upper level of the gymnasium, ensuring energy efficiency and ample natural light. The lobby area features curtain wall construction with perforated metal screening. Through strategic orientation, the building maximizes daylight penetration on its northern and southern facades.
The Abbotts Creek Community Center stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering healthy living and recreational opportunities for its residents. With state-of-the-art facilities and sustainable design features, it serves as a hub for community engagement and well-being.
