The Taiyuan Tourism College Gym, designed by China Architecture Design & Research Group (CADG), stands as a testament to architectural excellence and sporting innovation. Serving as the venue for the Volleyball competition (Women’s U15 Club Group) of the 2nd National Youth Games of China, this state-of-the-art facility is nestled in the northeastern part of the Taiyuan Tourism College campus. Under the visionary direction of CUI Kai, Chief Architect of CADG and an esteemed academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, alongside JING Quan, the team leader and president of Architecture Design & Research Institute I of CADG, the project was completed in a mere two years.

Embracing Versatility

A primary consideration in the design process was to ensure the venue’s adaptability beyond the event, with a focus on public accessibility. The concept revolves around creating a versatile space conducive to various activities. The main arena, characterized by its expansive layout, is envisioned as a multifunctional space capable of accommodating diverse events beyond volleyball matches.

Integrating Form and Function

The architectural expression of the building’s facades reflects a deep understanding of internal functionalities, fostering user engagement and interaction. Clear sightlines and intuitive spatial organization enhance the building’s identity while promoting a seamless transition between the interior and exterior environments.

Flexible Design Solutions

The interior space is characterized by its simplicity and clarity, with the competition court and training facilities sharing a cohesive main hall. Flexible design solutions, including demountable acoustic barriers and temporary partitions, offer multiple layout options, catering to the evolving needs of users. Motorized roller shades, telescopic grandstands, and movable court mats further enhance the venue’s adaptability, aligning with contemporary trends in sports architecture.

Structural Innovation

The building’s arched roof, composed of 12 distinct arches, exemplifies a harmonious blend of form and function. Utilizing cylindrical and conical surfaces, the roof design facilitates efficient panelization while imbuing the structure with geometric elegance. Durable materials such as fair-faced concrete and red bricks underscore the building’s longevity and simplicity, while the curved metal roof adds a touch of modernity to the architectural composition.
