Heartbeat@Bedok: A Hub for Community Cohesion

Nestled in Bedok North, Heartbeat@Bedok stands tall as a seven-story edifice, hosting multiple Co-Location Partners (CLPs). It serves as a pivotal civic and community space for Bedok residents, with a special focus on senior citizens, offering integrated services aimed at fostering social connections and nurturing community spirit.

This architectural gem emerged from the metamorphosis of a public park in the heart of the bustling East Coast neighborhood. As part of HDB’s ‘Remaking Our Heartland’ initiative, aimed at revitalizing the Bedok Town Centre, the site seamlessly integrates a community club, sports and recreation center, public library, polyclinic, and senior care center.

Heartbeat@Bedok stands out as an exemplar of contemporary sustainability, characterized by its unique inverted podium-and-blocks design. Functionality reigns supreme within this structure, with the elevated podium facilitating optimized natural ventilation, fostering microclimates around internal public spaces. A sprawling covered area diagonally spanning 145 meters across the site forms a three-story atrium, enhancing connectivity and visual coherence across different floors.

This cohesive planning approach is underscored by innovative environmental initiatives, with lush greenery adorning the site and passive environmental controls embedded throughout. From rainwater and grey water systems to specialized façade glazing and brise soleil elements, the building embraces environmentally progressive features aimed at reducing energy consumption and operational costs while ensuring a sustainable future for the community.
