Redefining Urban Recreation: StreetDome

CEBRA and Glifberg+Lykke, Danish architecture and design firms, have collaborated to create StreetDome, a multifaceted park and cultural center for street sports located on the harbor front of Haderslev in southern Denmark. This expansive urban landscape spans 4,500 square meters and offers a diverse range of recreational activities, including a skate park, street basketball, parkour, boulder climbing, and canoe polo.

A Cultural Hub for Unorganized Sports

StreetDome aims to establish new benchmarks for urban arenas catering to unorganized sports. It serves as an open playground and social gathering space for individuals of all ages, skill levels, and cultural backgrounds. The project originated nearly a decade ago from the vision of Morten Hansen, a local activist and chairman of the SkateCity association, who envisioned a cultural hub integrating extensive recreational areas.

Fusion of Architecture and Functionality

The collaboration between CEBRA and Glifberg+Lykke has resulted in a seamless integration of architecture, design, and functionality, shaping StreetDome’s distinctive identity. This fusion forms the underlying DNA of the park, creating an interconnected environment. The design process prioritized input from various user groups, ensuring that the final design reflects the needs and preferences of the community.

The Park: Dynamic and Adaptive

Glifberg+Lykke’s design for the skate park features three main sections: the street plaza, transitions-based flow section, and park area with ditches and banks. Each element is designed for adaptive use, encouraging exploration and creativity among users. The park evolves over time, challenging athletes both physically and creatively without limitations.

The Dome: Innovative Architecture

CEBRA’s igloo hall concept forms the basis of StreetDome’s structure. The unheated hall maximizes natural daylight to reduce operational costs, while its dome shape minimizes surface area. The spacious interior accommodates various sports and activities, including skateboarding, boulder climbing, and street basketball. The dome seamlessly integrates with the surrounding skate park, featuring scooped-out pools and a central boulder structure with additional amenities.

StreetDome represents a modern urban recreation facility that seamlessly blends architectural innovation with functionality, providing Scandinavia with a dynamic and versatile street sports arena.
