In the three decades since the collapse of communism, Warsaw’s hyper-centre has undergone rapid transformation, with corporate architectures dominating the skyline. However, public spaces have remained largely unchanged, retaining their monumental scale and socialist character. Recently, a series of public investments has aimed to revitalize the city center, presenting an opportunity to activate and inhabit these spaces.

A New Interface for Urban Engagement

In response to this evolving urban context, Marcin Kwietowicz and Michal Sikorski envisioned a connection between the traditional stone-clad public areas and the modern glass skyline. Their solution? A horizontal skyscraper constructed from wood, housing various public amenities. This innovative project serves as an interface between the existing urban fabric and the towering corporate structures, engaging with the surrounding skyline in a meaningful dialogue.

The “TARAS” Urban Deck

The “TARAS” urban deck is the result of the Warsaw participatory budgeting program, aiming to breathe new life into a neglected corner of a park. This public space revitalizes an underutilized pavilion and marks the boundary of the construction site for the new museum of modern art. The greyish wooden decking, shaped like an elongated rectangle, harmonizes with the adjacent office buildings, blending corporate aesthetics with public functionality.

A Minimalistic Oasis

Located near the imposing Palace of Culture and Science, the TARAS Skatepark resembles a large wooden deck, spanning 80×20 meters. It offers a tranquil oasis amid the bustling city, providing an organized yet minimalistic public space. Elevated above the urban chaos, this platform serves as a calm retreat, allowing visitors to escape the noise and chaos of the city below.
