Bates Smart undertook the challenge of designing the new Club Stand at Flemington Racecourse in response to the brief from the Victoria Racing Club (VRC). The goal was to create a symbolic structure that not only pays homage to the club’s rich heritage but also transforms the race day experience for the future. The team aimed to craft a distinctive and memorable building that would leave an enduring mark on Flemington’s legacy.

Embracing Innovation and Tradition

The oval shape of the building, inspired by the racetrack itself and Flemington’s iconic rose gardens, was instrumental in resolving functional issues while also honoring the site’s context. This design choice allowed for a panoramic viewing experience from all sides, capturing the excitement and drama of horse racing. The highly sculptural and curvilinear design pays homage to race day millinery, creating a dynamic presence that sets the stand apart.

Seamlessly Integrated Spaces

Positioned strategically near the main entry point, The Club Stand serves as a central hub connecting various elements of the racecourse. Its sweeping form provides members with opportunities to witness the action both on and off the track. Internally, the flexible layout accommodates a diverse range of hospitality spaces, designed to meet contemporary expectations and the evolving needs of members.

Elevated Race Day Experience

Thorough research and analysis of visitor movement informed the design process, ensuring optimal flow and comfort during peak periods. The stand offers thirteen different venues, providing race-goers with unparalleled dining and entertainment options. While celebrating the VRC’s heritage through artwork and repurposed elements from the former grandstand, the design also looks towards the future, embodying a seamless blend of tradition and innovation.
