Situated in Shanghai’s Baoshan district, the Shanghai Vanke Qichen Community Center occupies a unique triangular site bordered by intersecting urban roads. The architectural challenge was to seamlessly blend the building into its surroundings while establishing a distinct identity within the cityscape. By strategically positioning the main entrance and optimizing traffic flow, the design achieves a multi-layered public space that enhances urban vitality.

Functionality and Spatial Flow

The design revolves around two primary axes: a north-south axis defining the community entrance and an east-west axis delineating the interior space. From west to east, the building features three distinct courtyards, each serving as a focal point for various activities. The entrance hall serves as a spatial divider, with community service facilities and a city exhibition center on the west side, and a senior citizens activity center on the east. The integration of landscaped areas and corridors creates a cohesive spatial experience that encourages movement and interaction.

Natural Light and Architectural Expression

Natural light plays a pivotal role in the architectural design, with strategically placed courtyards and skylights ensuring ample daylight penetration. The pitched roof design not only enhances natural lighting but also adds a sense of verticality and ritual to the interior space. Externally, fold windows create a dynamic rhythm on the facade, complementing the building’s architectural expression and generating striking light effects.
