Donald Trump Reportedly Offered Truth Social Sale to Elon Musk
Donald Trump reportedly made an offer to sell his social media platform, Truth Social, to Elon Musk, as per The Washington Post. The former president proposed the idea last summer, according to two unnamed sources cited by the Post.
Musk, who took control of Twitter (now known as X) in late 2022 and briefly served as CEO before appointing Linda Yaccarino to the role in early June last year, has had ongoing communication with Trump, the Post revealed. Despite previous discussions yielding no results, Trump continues to advocate for Musk’s acquisition of the platform.
In a CNBC interview, Trump acknowledged a recent meeting with Musk but expressed uncertainty about whether Musk would endorse him. Musk reinstated Trump’s Twitter account in November 2022, shortly after acquiring the company in a $44 billion deal. Trump had been banned from Twitter following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
However, despite having a significantly smaller following on Truth Social compared to X, Trump has shown a preference for the platform.
Representatives for Musk and Trump did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. The Post quoted brief remarks from Musk and a representative of Trump Media that did not address the substance of the report.
Trump’s Truth Social has encountered financial challenges since its launch in 2022. According to SEC filings from November, the platform incurred significant losses last year. The planned merger between Trump Media and Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, and the Digital World Acquisition Corp has faced delays, with the SEC recently clearing the way for the deal, which is expected to be a significant boost for Trump.
