Rep. Dean Phillips Reacts to Super Tuesday Defeat with Frustration
Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota expressed his discontent after facing a significant defeat on Super Tuesday.
“Congratulations to Joe Biden, Uncommitted, Marianne Williamson, and Nikki Haley for demonstrating more appeal to Democratic Party loyalists than me,” Phillips wrote on X on Tuesday following his loss to President Joe Biden in his home state.
He added a mention of Jason Palmer, the sole presidential candidate who won the Democratic primary in American Samoa.
As the election results unfolded, Phillips engaged in a heated exchange with Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.
“Appreciate the self-awareness. Tonight’s the night you should drop out and support our nominee Joe Biden,” Newsom suggested in response to Phillips’ X post.
Phillips curtly replied, “From a self-awareness professional.”
Despite his efforts, Phillips had not secured any delegates at the time of writing.
Phillips announced his presidential bid in October, emphasizing the urgency of addressing critical issues facing the nation. He reiterated his concerns, stating, “I could not remain quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying we’re going to be facing an emergency next November.”
Reflecting on Biden’s overwhelming victory in the South Carolina primary, Phillips expressed respect for Biden but suggested that he should have passed the torch. He clarified that his campaign was not a personal mission but a response to a perceived necessity.
Following the disappointing Super Tuesday results, Phillips told CNN that he would assess the outcome and available data before making a decision about the future of his candidacy. He had previously indicated that he would withdraw from the race and endorse the likely nominee if his campaign lacked viability after Super Tuesday.
Representatives for Phillips did not respond immediately to requests for comment from Business Insider outside regular business hours.
